Expanding Nighttime Living Space
Most homeowners tend to think of outdoor lighting as a security measure and focus simply on lighting the perimeter of their property. But this misconception not only reduces the visual impact which lighting can have on a property but it also reduces or eliminates another major benefit; the extension of actual living space in the evenings.
When light is introduced into a dark back or front yard, it visually pushes the boundaries of a house. People regain their depth perception and ability to see and appreciate the space, even in the darker conditions. In a sense, it allows your guests to associate the outdoor living spaces as a continuation of your home just as they would during daylight hours. Pushing this boundary creates a visually striking look for the outside of the house and creates an inviting additional living space outdoors.

Boundary Lighting
A great practice for expanding nighttime living space is referred to as boundary lighting. Many people have a fence or shrub line that represents the end of their property line. This section can be illuminated with a small output wall wash fixture. When done properly using photo metrics, which is the science of the measure of light in terms of how the human eye perceives brightness, more than one light can be overlapped to create a continuous wall of light that will subtly indicate the edges of a yard.
Plan for the outside as well as the inside
During the process of designing a new lighting plan, it is important to include what will happen on the inside of the house, especially in the main areas which look outward. If the living or dining room is in the back of the house, shifting the balance of the entire lighting plan to better represent the most trafficked area may be a desire of the homeowner. Opposite to this, if the bedroom is in a particular area that has a lot of windows, the design may require extra care to not place too much light into that area.
